When we hear the word “curse,” several negative thoughts flood our minds. The curse brings images of something evil. Curse refers to spoken obscenities or profanities.
The people of Moab had heard that Israel was a Blessed company of Invincible Champions. God had blessed His people and set them free. Balak, the king of Moab, called the prophet Balaam to curse Israel. Since God had blessed them, nothing they came against was able to stop them.
The curse came on all creation when Adam and Eve sinned, rebelled, and disobeyed God.
Initially, man was only blessed.
Everything prospered and flourished under God’s blessing. When sin entered, the curse fell on all creation. The curse was extensive and destructive, and affected everything man saw, touched, or hoped to achieve. As a result, life became difficult and ended in death. Immediately after their sin, God introduced a plan to defeat the power of the curse and the power of sin. God was not pleased to allow things to continue in that fallen state unchecked without hope in this world. He planned a redemption and escape from the power of the curse and sin.
God promised to send a Redeemer Who would defeat the power of sin and triumph over the curse, (Isaiah 59:20).
Initially, God covered Adam and Eve’s nakedness.
That simple covering presented the promise for a complete deliverance from the curse. At that time, the destructive power of sin and the curse controlled humanity.
During Noah’s time the evil of mankind became extreme.
The Lord God saw the wickedness of man was extreme and every intent of their thought was only evil continually. The consequences of evil brought extensive judgment on the earth. Although God’s judgment came as a result of the evil, He planned to conquer the curse and raise up a blessed people.
When Abraham responded with faith and obedience to His call, God promised to bless.
Genesis 12:3 NKJV I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
God’s provision for blessing extends to everyone who walks in fellowship with Jesus Christ and lives a life of faith and obedience. God’s provision and plan is open to anyone who will believe, receive, trust, and obey. With God’s help, through Christ we can be blessed and not cursed. This blessing that comes through Christ brings every spiritual blessing.
Ephesians 1:3 NKJV Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
These spiritual blessings provide believers heavenly privileges and resources in Christ. God’s blessing counteracts the very things that the curse brought.
In Deuteronomy, God gave contrasts between being blessed and cursed.
Deuteronomy 27:15-26 talks about cursed people.
- God said all idolatry is cursed.
- Anyone who dishonors his father or mother is cursed.
- Anyone who steals property is cursed.
- Anyone who misleads the blind is cursed.
- Those who deny justice are cursed.
- Those involved in sexual perversion are cursed.
- Anyone who attacks his neighbor in secret is cursed.
- Those who accept a bribe to strike down an innocent person is cursed.
God defines blessings with the same intensity.
The bold contrast of the curses and blessingS helps us understand the glory of God’s blessing. You need to know that God wants to bless and not curse.
Deuteronomy 28:1-9 NKJV Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God: Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the country. Your children and your crops will be blessed. The offspring of your herds and flocks will be blessed. Your fruit baskets and breadboards will be blessed. Wherever you go and whatever you do, you will be blessed. The Lord will conquer your enemies when they attack you. They will attack you from one direction, but they will scatter from you in seven! The Lord will guarantee a blessing on everything you do and will fill your storehouses with grain. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you. If you obey the commands of the Lord your God and walk in His ways, the Lord will establish you as His holy people as He swore He would do.
The next four verses continue with God’s covenant blessing.
God wants to bring us into His blessing through Jesus Christ. The curse that is a result of sin and disobedience is referred to 199 times in the Bible. God’s curse is very thorough.
Romans 1:18 NKJV For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men…
We need to know that God’s wrath will be revealed against ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. This is the reason that God sent His Son into the world. You need to familiarize yourself with these words again.
John 3:16-17 NKJV For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Jesus came to this earth to bring us into God’s blessing. He did not come to condemn us, but to redeem, save us and break the power of sin that was against us.
1 John 3:8 NKJV He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

All of the trouble and consequences that come from a lifestyle of transgression and sin can be conquered in Christ. God does not want any of you to suffer in the curse. He has made provision to bless and not curse.
How can you be blessed and not cursed?
Proverbs said the curse causeless would not come. If there is a curse, there is a cause. God outlined several things that bring the curse. The curse comes when we enter into any of those areas. If you are living in sin, you are cursed.
Satan wants to bring everyone under the power of the curse, but God has a message of Good News for us.
The Good News is the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
- You can be blessed through the powerful blood of Christ. The blood of Christ is more powerful than any curse. No demon, devil, sin, or curse is greater than the blood of Jesus Christ.
- You can be blessed by Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. When Jesus Christ died on the Cross, He paid in full the penalty and judgment for the curse and its power. Sin was defeated by the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross.
- You can be blessed by accepting Christ as your Lord and Savior. When you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior, He will bring you His victory over every power of darkness and curse. Jesus Christ defeated the power of sin, Satan, death, and hell. Let Jesus in and He will bring you victory. When you accept Christ as your Savior and start obeying the Holy Spirit and God’s Word, you will be blessed and not cursed.
2 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.
Right now, God is ready to break every curse and give His glorious blessing and victory through Jesus Christ. Surrender your life to Jesus Christ and begin walking under the covering of Christ’s blood and in the victory of His cross. In Christ, you can be blessed and not cursed. If want to be made free, you need to come to Jesus Christ.
