Throughout eternity, God has been sitting on a throne in heaven. This means all authority, power and dominion belong to Him.
Isaiah 6:1 NKJV I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple.
For the next few weeks we are going to study eternity and heaven. Many things capture our attention when we think about heaven and eternity. The first thing that should come to mind is heaven is the abode of God almighty and He rules and reigns on His throne.
Moses was offering thanks and was remembering God’s promise to give His people the land flowing with milk and honey.
Deuteronomy 26:15 NKJV Look down from Your holy habitation, from heaven, and bless Your people…
He considered that God Almighty was looking down upon His people from His holy habitation in heaven. Great peace and comfort comes to our spirit and soul to know there is a holy God in heaven and that He blesses His people. Heaven is something higher than the sun, moon and stars. Technology and space exploration has shown us the vast universe. New telescopes have explored and evaluated far reaches of the universe. The holy habitation of God is outside of the heavens of heavens.
We are told that the Lord Almighty is the God of heaven, but that is more than the clouds and stars.
1 Kings 8:27 says, “Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You.
Have you considered how vast God’s kingdom and home must be? The Lord our God is Almighty and Omnipresent God. He is greater than the sum total of all of His creations.
Revelation 21:10-16 tells us the New Jerusalem will descend from God out of heaven. The New Jerusalem is described as being 1,500 miles long on all four sides. The Lord our God is a Mighty God.
Throughout the Bible, God rules and reigns in heaven. In Genesis 22:11,15, we are told the Lord called to Abraham from heaven. God Almighty is not some lesser god that is the work of man’s hands on stone or wood. The eternal God is the “God of heaven,” (Genesis 24:3-7).
Heaven is the holy habitation of God.
David and Isaiah said, “The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man,” (Psalms 14:2; Isaiah 63:15). Solomon was praying and said, “Listen from heaven your dwelling place,” (1 kings 8:30). Consider that the Lord God Almighty is watching over all of the works of mankind and all of His creation. Nothing ever escapes the eye of the Lord.
In Psalm 33:18 NKJV it says, “Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy,
Since God is high and exalted, He is able to keep those in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Him and trusts in Him.
Heaven is God’s throne, (Isaiah 66:1).
Isaiah 66:1 NKJV Thus says the Lord: “Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool.” God the Father rules and reigns from His throne in heaven. This is the place where God controls and directs the course and events of all things.
Let me remind you that nothing escapes God’s eye and attention. The Lord rules and reigns.
Psalms 75:7 God is the judge: He puts down one, and exalts another.
Consider the depth of God’s control over all of His creation.
Daniel 2:21-22 NKJV He changes the times and the seasons; He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding. He reveals deep and secret things; He knows what is in the darkness, And light dwells with Him.
Some people are so filled with themselves that they think they can control the times and seasons of the world. God says all of this is in His control. There is a God in heaven that sets upon a throne.
In Matthew 6:9, When Jesus was teaching His disciples to pray, He said, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name…”
Jesus was doing more than trying to locate God. He is establishing the authority of our Father in heaven. Our Father in heaven has every answer for all of our prayer. Surely He is almighty.
Often God spoke to individuals from heaven.
- God called to Abraham from heaven, (Genesis 22:11).
- Jacob saw a ladder that reached to heaven, and the Lord God spoke to him from heaven, (Genesis 28:11-22).
- When David built an altar to the Lord, God answered him by fire from heaven, (1 Chronicles 21:26).
- When Jesus was baptized and when He was on the Mount of Transfiguration, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son.” (Matthew 3:17; Luke 9:35).
Eternity — Heaven — The Throne of God
One of the things that is most notable is God reigns on His throne.
Revelation 19:5-6 NKJV Then a voice came from the throne, saying, “Praise our God, all you His servants and those who fear Him, both small and great!” And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters and as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!
“Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! This is good news, Our God reigns! He is the omnipotent God and has sovereign power. God reigns in heaven above and on the earth beneath. Read the Bible and you will see the ultimate authority is God and the vast power of His kingdom. He sets up kingdoms and kings and by His own power He removes them. The course of the earth is under His control. When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He recognized the authority and sovereign control of the Father in heaven. You need to know that God is in control today.
The throne of God is a testimony of God’s reign, authority and sovereign control. All of the mercies and gifts come down to us from God in heaven. This is why David lifted His eyes unto the hills.
Psalm 121:1-2 NKJV I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
Daniel knew he did not have the answer for Nebuchadnezzar, the King. He knew his help came from God. Daniel 2:28 NKJV He said, “But there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets…” Daniel knew God Almighty reigns on His throne.
Isaiah 45:2-3 NKJV ‘I will go before you And make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze And cut the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness And hidden riches of secret places, That you may know that I, the Lord, Who call you by your name, Am the God of Israel.
The Lord God Almighty Who sets on His throne in Heaven can straighten what is crooked and open what is hidden. He knows your name.
After God’s people had sinned, they decided to turn back to the Lord.
Lamentations 3:41 NKJV Let us lift our hearts and hands to God in heaven.
Jeremiah knew that the only solution for their sin and rebellion was the God Who reigns in heaven.
Moses recognized God’s sovereign power.
Deuteronomy 3:24 NKJV ‘O Lord God, You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your mighty hand, for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do anything like Your works and Your mighty deeds?
You need to recognize this today. There is no one who can help you like the Lord our God. The Lord God Omnipotent Reigns!
James 1:17 NKJV Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
We are dependent on the good and perfect things God gives. In the fullness of time, God sent His Son and Jesus came down from heaven. After Jesus finished the work He was sent to do, on the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was sent down from the Father in heaven. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father in heaven. You need to settle this fact that nothing is too big for the Lord our God to do. No one is greater or has more authority or power. Lift up your eyes and rejoice, for the Lord God Almighty reigns. He is seated on the highest throne and possesses sovereign and almighty power. Whatever it is you face, you need to seek the Lord and He will hear you and deliver you from all your fears, (Psalms 34:5).
To guarantee that your redemption and inheritance is in Christ, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory has raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in heavenly places, (Ephesians 1:17-20). God has put all things under Christ’s feet and has given Him to be the head over all things to the church. (vs. 22)
Why has God done this? The Lord God Almighty, Who sits upon His throne, is preparing to show His exceeding rich grace in His kindness toward us in Christ.
Ephesians 2:13 NKJV But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
Ephesians 2:18 NKJV For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
Through Christ, we now have access to the God of heaven Who sits upon His throne.
