Jehovah Sabaoth – Yehôvâh Saba-ōth
The Lord of Hosts Fights for us.
Isaiah 6:3 NKJV And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”
The Old Testament saints knew God as the Lord of hosts.
The Lord our God is Jehovah Sabaoth. We need to know that He is the Lord of Hosts. From Samuel through Malachi, the Lord of hosts is mentioned 273 times.
2 Samuel 5:10 says, “David grew greater and greater, for The Lord of Hosts was with Him.”
His enemies were defeated because The Lord of Hosts was with Him.
Psalms 46:7 —The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge”
David continued to rely on The Lord of Hosts.
Psalm 89:8 — O Lord God of hosts, Who is mighty like You, O Lord? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
Psalms 84:8 — Lord of hosts, Hear my prayer
Psalms 24:10 — The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory
The original word for “hosts” is — צֹבֶה — (sa-ba)
It means, “an organized army, a host of angels ready and poised for battle.” God has an organized host of thousands of His angels, horses, and chariots of fire that are ready and awaiting His command.
Psalm 68:17 AMP The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands upon thousands. The Lord is among them as He was in Sinai, [so also] in the Holy Place.
The “Lord of Hosts” refers to God’s Lordship over the heavenly armies and also over every army.
We notice the extent of His Lordship when He commands even the armies of wicked nations. Throughout the Bible, wicked kings came in great numbers against God’s people. They had plans to utterly destroy, but God would turn them around, defeat them on the battlefield, or turn them against themselves.
He is The Lord of Hosts.
Many of the gods of this world were called, “king of the gods’’ or ‘king of the lands.” When the Lord God is called Jehovah Sabaoth it is a declaration of His supreme divine power. He is the only true Lord and creator of heaven and earth, and all of the hosts of heaven.
Psalm 46:1-11 NKJV God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn. The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has made desolations in the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
Jehovah Sabaoth — The Lord of hosts is with us.
God has shown Himself to be mighty to save and deliver.
We depend on His strength and help in the times of trouble.
The Lord of Hosts is mighty to save. When the enemy encamps around His people, God is a very present help. Jehovah Sabaoth has delivered His people from enemies that would have been too great and numerous to conquer.
- He did it for Moses and Israel when Pharaoh and his armies came out with all of their horses and chariots.
- When the Syrians surrounded the city with horses and chariots and a great army, Elisha told his servant, “Do not fear for there are more with us than with them.” The Lord of Host was with them.
- Ben-Hadad king of Syria had gathered all his army against Samaria. God’s people were starving when the king of Israel prayed for the Lord of Hosts to help them. When the Lord of Hosts showed up, the armies of the Syrians heard the noise of chariots and horses and a great army. They arose and fled in the night and left all of their silver, gold, clothing, and food.
God promised to save them from the devouring plague of the enemy and take vengeance on those who attempted to destroy His people. When God comes to our aid, He gives rest to His people.
When Solomon was being anointed king, David spoke to Israel and his son.
1 Chronicles 22:17 NKJV David also commanded all the leaders of Israel to help Solomon his son, saying, “Is not the Lord your God with you? And has He not given you rest on every side?”
Do you know what it means when the Lord God is with you?
God is the One Who has given you rest on every side.
- He is Jehovah Jireh, the God Who provides.
- He is Jehovah Nissi, the God Who gives me victory.
- He is Jehovah Roi, the God Who lives and sees.
- He is Jehovah Shalom, the God Who calms all my fears and gives me peace.
- He is Jehovah Sabaoth, the Lord of hosts Who delivers me from all my enemies.
Psalm 124:1-5 NIV84 If the Lord had not been on our side— let Israel say— if the Lord had not been on our side when men attacked us, when their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive; the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, the raging waters would have swept us away.
Psalm 124:8 NKJV Our help is in the name of the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
This strong message reverberates throughout the Bible.
God wants all of His people to know that He is a very present help in their times of trouble. The Lord of Hosts is ready to fight for you. All of the angels of the Lord are standing ready for His command. The Lord is your defense and strong tower in times of trouble. He will take vengeance on the enemy of your body and soul.
Deuteronomy 11:25 NKJV No man shall be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put the dread of you and the fear of you upon all the land where you tread, just as He has said to you.
The Lord God Almighty is Jehovah Sabaoth — the Lord of Hosts.
Elisha knew what this was like.
He told his servant, “Fear not, for those who are with us are more than those who are against us,” (2 Kings 6:16). Even when you do not see the hosts of God’s armies, they are encamped around those who fear Him. Jehovah Sabaoth — the Lord of Hosts has thousands upon thousands of His armies.
Romans 8:31 NKJV What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
God will fight for His people where they live.
- The Lord of Hosts is coming to your aid. Tens of thousands of angels respond to His command.
- He is Our Redeemer. Satan’s power and sin’s dominion are broken.
- He is the Lord our Healer. By His stripes you are healed.
You don’t fight your battles alone. The Great Almighty God is the Great I AM and He is mighty to save, heal and deliver.
Psalm 24:7-10 NKJV Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah
