The blood of Jesus Christ is the most precious and powerful gift our heavenly Father has given to His church. There is wonder-working power in the precious blood of the Lamb. 1 Peter 1:18-19 tells us we were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ. The power and significance of His blood is still effective. His bloodmakes it possible for our sins to be remitted. By His blood we are freed from the bondage of iniquity and our sins are covered. Beyond forgiveness and cleansing from sins, there is power in His blood. Wonderful changes in our lives are provided through the precious blood of Jesus.
In Scripture, the blood is spoken of in two ways — “Blood Shed” and “Blood Sprinkled!” Most Christians know that the blood of Jesus was shed for us. At His last Passover, Jesus said, “This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you,” (Luke 22:20). When we take communion, we remember that His blood was shed for us. Jesus’ blood was shed or given for us.
Do you know about His blood being sprinkled?
The first biblical reference to the sprinkling of blood is in Exodus 12:22. Israel was commanded to take hyssop and dip it in the blood of the lamb and strike the doorposts of their house. That night, when the Lord passed through the land and saw the blood on the doorposts, He would pass over the house. As long as the blood was left in the basin, it was of no effect. It was merely blood that had been shed. The blood had power to save and protect when it was sprinkled!
Why not simply lay the basin of blood at the threshold?
They could have said, “It doesn’t matter what we do with it. After all, blood is blood.” When the Lord passed through the land, that home would have suffered loss. The blood had to be lifted out of the basin and sprinkled on the doorposts to fulfill its purpose of protection.
The blood of the lamb is a type of the blood of Christ.
The blood of Christ that flowed at Calvary was not wasted. It did not fall to the ground and disappear. That precious blood has been applied to the believer. We have been sprinkled with the precious blood of Christ. If Christ is Lord of your life, then His blood has been sprinkled on your heart.
This sprinkling is not just for forgiveness – it provides protection!
When you are sprinkled, you are under the protection and covering of Christ’s blood. Satan’s destroying powers cannot touch anyone sprinkled with Christ’s blood!
There is also a sprinkling of blood mentioned in Exodus 24:1-11.
God made a covenant agreement with Israel. He promised, “If you will obey My words, I will be a God to you, and you will be My people.” After Moses read the law to the people, they answered, “We understand — and we will obey.” The covenant was sealed, ratified, and made valid when Moses “took the blood… and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,” (Hebrews 9:19). Moses took the blood of the burnt offerings and poured part of it by the altar. Then he took hyssop, dipped it in the basin, and sprinkled some of the blood on the twelve pillars (representing the twelve tribes of Israel). Finally, Moses dipped the hyssop into the basin and sprinkled the blood on the people.
This blood that covered the people sealed the covenant! Sprinkling of the blood gave Israel full access and fellowship with God. They were sanctified, cleansed and made acceptable to be in God’s presence. After they were sprinkled with the blood, Moses, Nadab, Abihu and the seventy elders went up to the mountain to meet God. The Lord appeared to them.
Exodus 24:8-11 NKJV And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant which the Lord has made with you according to all these words.” Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity. But on the nobles of the children of Israel He did not lay His hand. So they saw God, and they ate and drank.
Did you hear that?
They had feared for their lives in the presence of God, now they saw God and ate and drank in His presence. Under the blood covering they could fellowship with God. The blood had been sprinkled and they stood in the safety, power, and security of the blood covering!
Friends, there is something better provided for us in this new covenant with Jesus Christ –- we are sealed by His blood.
His precious blood has been sprinkled on your soul and that blood covering has provided fellowship with Almighty God. We can boldly come into His presence and have access to the Father without sin condemning you. You are free to walk and talk with God and enjoy the power and glory of His presence.
One of the most important sprinklings of blood happened once a year when the High Priest went into the Holy of Holies to make atonement for the people.
The blood covering reconciled the people to God and they could have fellowship with the heavenly Father. The priest carried a handful of incense, a censer of burning coals from the altar, and a container of blood from a slain ox into the Holy of Holies. Within the Holy of Holies was the ark of God’s covenant. The ark represented the presence of God to God’s people. On top of the ark sat the golden mercy seat. The mercy seat was where God’s presence came down.
After cleansing himself, the priest went inside the holy of holies with great reverence and fear. He dropped the incense into the fire and the aroma and smoke ascended before God. Then the priest dipped his finger into the blood and sprinkled it seven times on the mercy seat.
Leviticus 16:14 “And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times”
When the blood was sprinkled, forgiveness of all past sins was accomplished. When the high priest came out, the people knew that God had accepted the sacrifice and they rejoiced because their sins were pardoned.
We have a High Priest — Jesus Christ, our Lord. He presented His blood in the presence of God for the remission of all sins.
Hebrews 9:12 NKJV …with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption..
Hebrews 9:14 NKJV how much more shall the blood of Christ, …cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Jesus Christ, our High Priest presented His own blood into heaven itself for us! His blood is not reserved there as a memorial. His blood is sprinkled on all who come to Him by faith!
The blood of Jesus has been sprinkled upon our heart.
When you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, we are covered. When we receive His finished work at Calvary, the blood is sprinkled. This is a legal and spiritual transaction and the blood is sprinkled on our hearts in response to our faith.
The blood of Jesus can produce no effect on our souls until we truly believe in the power of His sacrifice at Calvary.
His blood has power to justify and sanctify you in God’s sight. His blood is powerful to set you free, to cleanse and heal. His blood can make you righteous in God’s sight. When you believe with all your heart, your conscience and soul can rest. You can know and trust that you are saved, forgiven, and healed by the blood.
How can you know the blood has been applied to your heart?
Here are three ways you can know if you have been sprinkled by the blood.
1 John 1:7 NKJV But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
John was talking about those who are living in confidence. When you are walking in the Light, you know that the blood of Jesus has cleansed you from sin. If you love the LIGHT, it’s a sure sign you have been covered by the blood!
Second, if you call on the power and authority of Christ’s blood when you are under attack, you can know you have been sprinkled.
Those who have not been sprinkled with the blood call their best friend when they are in trouble. They are filled with fear and condemnation.
When you are sprinkled with blood, you take your stand on Jesus’ blood!
We are not fearful and defensive but mighty through God. We are blood-bought, blood-saved and blood-covered. We are more than conquerors through Jesus Christ! We are not pleading a case before the enemy. The blood of Jesus Christ has prevailed and we are more than conquerors because He has won the victory for us.
Declare victory by the blood of Jesus!
- I am washed by the blood.
- I have been bought by the blood.
- I am justified by the blood.
- I am safe and covered by the blood.
- I am ransomed by the blood.
- I have the victory of the blood of Jesus!
Third, if you are secure in the cleansing, justifying power of the blood, your conscience no longer condemns you.
If your conscience condemns and constantly reminds you of past failures, you need to be sprinkled with Jesus’ blood. When you fully rest in the cleansing, justifying power of Christ’s blood… your conscience is no longer an accuser. When the devil comes against you with an evil accusation, your conscience proclaims the victory of the blood!
Hebrews 10:22 NKJV Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience.
What are the benefits that flow from the blood of Jesus once our heart has been sprinkled?
Jesus’ blood redeems us from sin and the power of darkness.
Ephesians 1:7 NKJV In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace
We are no longer under condemnation or fear! Some people have been redeemed and justified by the blood — but they don’t know it. They live in fear of condemnation. They have been saved, but their past condemns them. They don’t know what the blood has done for them.
They’re like a man who had a huge debt he could not pay. The man’s wealthy boss paid the bill without telling his employee. After paying the debt, he called him in to give him the good news. The man sat down and was handed the stack of his debts. He flipped through the pages and saw the bills he accumulated. He thought, “I’ll never be able to pay all this and they are going to throw me in jail!” Seeing the man’s fearful countenance, the boss was perplexed. He asked, “Did you look at the first page?” The man flipped back to the first page, which read: “Paid in full.”
You need to know that your sin has been covered and the debt has been paid in full!
Jesus’ blood has purchased the whole church of God.
Acts 20:28 tells us …the church of God, which He has purchased with His own blood.
Christ’s church has been purchased by His own blood! His glorious church is washed in the blood of the Lamb.
Jesus’ blood has broken down all of the walls that have separated us.
Ephesians 2:13-14 NKJV But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,
We are the blood-bought church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who are blood-sprinkled no longer have walls. They have all come down!
1 John 1:7 NKJV…the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
You are sanctified — sprinkled clean! You are standing in a powerful position by the blood of Christ.
Revelation 12:11 NKJV And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony…
This is the word of our testimony. Our testimony says, “I believe in the blood of Jesus Christ!” “The blood of Jesus Christ is my prevailing, overcoming power.” “I proclaim its total victory!” If you want to overcome sin and the devil, stand on the blood — and proclaim its power!
The blood gives us access to the heavenly holy of holies and to our heavenly Father without reproach.
Hebrews 10:19 “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus.”
It is good that the blood of Jesus gives victory and the power to overcome the adversary. Think about the impact that the blood of Christ has in giving us bold access to our heavenly Father! At the base of Sinai, everyone trembled with fear at the presence of God. You have bold access to God by the blood of Jesus.
Thank God for the precious blood of Jesus, with high praises.
Romans 5:11 NKJV …we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.
Psalm 32:11 NKJV Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!
Isaiah 61:10 NKJV I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
