Jesus is the One!
John 3:16 NKJV For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…
Many people have questions about Jesus Christ. Some say He was a good man, a prophet, a miracle worker, an historical figure that was popular at His time. In Islam, Jesus (Isa) is presented to be a prophet, miracle worker, and the Messiah sent to the Israelites, but they deny that He is the Son of God. Christians believe that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah, the Christ, and the Son of God.
The Bible tells us Who Jesus is.
The sixty-six books of the Bible were written by more than 40 authors over a period of about 1,600 years. Throughout the Old Testament hundreds of prophecies were given about every aspect of His birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection. They tell us God’s Messiah Who would die and rise from the grave to redeem people from their sins. The array of prophecies over hundreds of years finds their fulfillment in the short thirty-year birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus of Nazareth.
- Based on Old Testament prophecies, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel would come to Zion, (Isaiah 59:20; 9:6).
- He would be born of a virgin and His name would be called Immanuel (Isaiah 7:14).
- Eight hundred years before Christ, Micah the prophet said that He would be born in Bethlehem, (Micah 5:2).
- Psalms 72:10, 15 and Isaiah 60: 3, 6 tells of Magi who will come bringing gold and incense to worship Him.
- Numbers tells us His star would arise out of Jacob, His scepter out of Israel, and He shall have dominion, (Numbers 24:17,19).
Isaiah 9:1-2 NKJV In Galilee of the Gentiles, the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.
- His name would be called Immanuel, God with us.
- The Messiah would be a prophet like Moses, (Deuteronomy 18:18), and a priest after the order of Melchizedek, (Psalm 110:4).
Isaiah prophesied about His miracles and ministry.
Isaiah 35:5-6 NKJV Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, And the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then the lame shall leap like a deer, And the tongue of the dumb sing. For waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, And streams in the desert.
- He would be a King (Isaiah 11:1–4), of the lineage of David, (Matthew 22:42).
The details of the prophesies were presented so clearly that it is impossible to deny the fact that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Son of God.
When the Apostles were considering His preeminence, they knew that He was the One in Whom we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:15-16 NKJV He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.
In Isaiah 42, the Father said, “My Elect One in whom My soul delights.”
The Father said that He would put His Spirit upon Him and call Him in righteousness and give Him as a covenant to the people. That covenant is filled with promise.
Isaiah 42:7 NKJV To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
Isaiah 61 foretold His ministry.
In Luke 4, Jesus read these words in a synagogue on the Sabbath in Nazareth.
Isaiah 61:1 NKJV The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound…
Then Jesus proclaimed, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21)
Isaiah 53 prophesied about His suffering and death to bring our redemption.
Isaiah 53:4-5 NKJV Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
One thousand years before it happened, David said, “They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture,” (Psalm 22: 18).
Hundreds of prophecies are given with great detail so that we may know the Messiah, the Christ, when He appears. The writer of the Gospels carefully pointed to the person, words, and works of Jesus Christ. They recorded many miracles and signs that He did, but many of His miracles were not written down.
John 20:31 NKJV But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
Jesus is the One!
Before He was born, the angel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her that she would be the mother of Christ.
Luke 1:32 NKJV He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
Luke 1:34 NIV84 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
Mary did not doubt what the angel Gabriel said, but she was amazed that God was going to do a work in her that had never been done before.
Luke 1:35 NKJV And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.”
The miraculous nature of Christ’s conception affirms the supernatural nature of Jesus.
Jesus is the One!
When Jesus was baptized by John, the Father in heaven declared that He was His son.
Mark 1:10-11 NKJV And immediately, coming up from the water, He saw the heavens parting and the Spirit descending upon Him like a dove. Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Jesus is the One!
He had just healed the Centurion’s servant and had raised the widow of Nain’s son from the dead.
The report of all that Jesus was doing went throughout all Judea and the surrounding regions. When John the Baptist’s disciples reported all of these things to him, John sent two of them to Jesus. Remember that John had seen the Holy Spirit descend on Jesus in the form of a dove. He had heard that voice from heaven say, “This is My Beloved Son.” John wanted to know for certain if Jesus is the One, so he sent two of his disciples to Jesus.
Luke 7:20-22 NKJV When the men had come to Him, they said, “John the Baptist has sent us to You, saying, ‘Are You the Coming One, or do we look for another?’ ” And that very hour He cured many of infirmities, afflictions, and evil spirits; and to many blind He gave sight. Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.”
Jesus is the One!
His disciples affirmed the fact that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God.
Jesus had come walking on the water to the disciples. Peter wanted to know if it was Him and said, “Lord if it is You, command me to come to You walking on the water.” After Jesus said “Come,” Simon Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. When his faith began to fail, and Peter began to sink, Jesus stretched out His hand and rescued him. At that moment, some dramatic things happened. They got into the boat and the wind ceased.
Matthew 14:33 NKJV Then those who were in the boat came and worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”
After Jesus fed 4,000 with seven loaves and a few little fish, He asked His disciples, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” (Matthew 16:13)
Matthew 16:14-16 NKJV So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus is the One!
Only God has the power to forgive sins.
Isaiah 43:25 NIV84 “I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more.”
In the book of Mark, four men carried a paralytic to Jesus. When they could not get to Him, they went upon the roof and uncovered the roof and let the man down on the bed to Jesus.
Mark 2:5 NKJV When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, “Son, your sins are forgiven you.”
Many of those present thought this was blaspheme. But Jesus immediately told the man, “Arise, take up your bed and walk.” Then He indicated that He did this so they would know that He had the power to forgive sins.
Jesus is the One!
Before Jesus was to be crucified, He was standing before the judgment of the High Priest.
The High Priest asked, “Are You the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” (Mark 15:61) Jesus replied, “I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” (Mark 15:62)
Jesus further proved that He was the Son of God when He arose from the grave.
