Behold Your God — Infinite

Behold Your God — Infinite

The Lord our God is infinite in relation to space and time. Before the creation of time and space, the eternal and infinite God created everything that we have to contend with that is related to space and time. God is unbounded, without known limits, undetermined, eternal, and is in no way limited to this universe or time. He is timeless (eternal) and without limits (not confined to space). The infinity of God cannot be designated to any one part of His being, nature or character. Every aspect of God is unbounded or unlimited. The only limits or constraints that are related to God are those He imposes upon Himself. At the same time, God is unified and cannot be divided or improved, thus, He is absolutely complete within Himself and full in every place without limits.

Since God transcends time and space, if we are to know Him, He must reveal Himself to us.

Psalm 139:7-8 AMP Where could I go from Your Spirit? Or where could I flee from Your presence? If I ascend up into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol (the place of the dead), behold, You are there.

Psalm 139:9-10 AMP If I take the wings of the morning or dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there shall Your hand lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me.

Psalm 139:11-12 AMP If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me and the night shall be [the only] light about me, Even the darkness hides nothing from You, but the night shines as the day; the darkness and the light are both alike to You.

Although God is present in all places and at all times, He is separate from His creations.

The New Testament presents a new possibility for believers that is unavailable in the Old Testament. Romans 8:9 and other places teaches that believers have the indwelling presence of Christ and the Holy Spirit. This indwelling presence speaks of a special spiritual presence of Christ and the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers. As a result of the constant indwelling of the Holy Spirit, believers experience a new life of power for living. This indwelling of the Spirit in no way makes God’s being a part of the believer’s being.

We know that God is holy, true, just, good, powerful, knowledgeable, loving, kind, merciful, gracious to an unlimited degree.

He possesses all of His characteristics to the infinite degree. God is so far above His creation in nature and being that He is incomprehensible to His creations. His incomprehensibility does not mean that God cannot be known. Frequently throughout Biblical history, God has revealed Himself in such a way that we may know Him. God is a spirit and the only way we may know His being or essence is if He makes Himself evident by His Own self-disclosure. Throughout time and space, God has disclosed His nature, essence, works, and word. We have all become witnesses of His vast creation, power, mercy, grace, sovereignty and works. Psalms 19:1 tells us that “the heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” Everything that God does discloses something of His eternal and limitless being. Yet, until God removes the veil from our eyes and shows Himself, we cannot know Him. God is incomprehensible, “unable to be fully understood or known.” It is not correct to say that God cannot be known, but He cannot be fully known. Even when we behold the wonders of His creation and the continued works of His providence, we cannot fully know Him.

It is impossible for humanity to fully know the infinite, transcendent, omniscient, almighty, omnipresent God.

Consider the multiple times that God revealed Himself in the Bible.

In every example, the individuals that were in His presence were to varying degrees overwhelmed by the power, presence, fire, glory and majesty of His presence. Even the individuals who had a heavenly vision of the glory and presence of God were unable to fully or adequately describe God’s infinite and limitless being. The Apostle Paul found himself unable to speak of the things he witnessed, and the things he heard were inexpressible and not lawful for a man to utter, (2 Corinthians 12:2-4). At best, we will find that our finite minds cannot know or describe the infinite and limitless God.

God dwells outside of time and space and is neither limited by space nor time.

He is everywhere present in His fullness continually. He is unbounded and unlimited to any point of space or time. Consecutively, He is not subject to change, (immutable).  He is totally consistent and changeless in nature while at the same time God is always active in His creation, sustaining it by the word of His power. Because God is boundless in His being, power, wisdom, and knowledge, His feelings, actions, and will are not beyond His control. His feelings and actions are a deliberate and voluntary choice. He has never failed to do anything that He has obliged Himself to do and has never transgressed His own integrity, will, or being. God is never the victim and has never lost control. The emotions of God transcend the experience of our finite mind or experience. We may know something about His love, mercy, knowledge, wisdom, holiness and not fully or exhaustively understand them. The various aspects of God’s divine being, essence and nature are beyond our ability to fully comprehend.

Psalm 139:6 NIV Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Many of the divine attributes have nothing in common with our human capacities. Were it not for special revelations, we would have no suspicion or shred of an idea of God’s infinite and limitless attributes. Since there is no one to whom we can compare with God and He is so highly exalted above all of His creations, we depend fully on God revealing Himself so that we may know Him.

Although we may not fully understand or comprehend Him, God has revealed Himself so that we may be able to know Him.

To that end, God has given enough Biblical evidence and revelation to assure that we may come to know and believe in Him.

Job 11:7 AMP Can you find out the deep things of God, or can you by searching find out the limits of the Almighty [explore His depths, ascend to His heights, extend to His breadths, and comprehend His infinite perfection]?

Job 11:8-9 AMP His wisdom is as high as the heights of heaven! What can you do? It is deeper than Sheol (the place of the dead)! What can you know? Longer in measure [and scope] is it than the earth, and broader than the sea.

Job 5:9-10 NKJV Who does great things, and unsearchable, Marvelous things without number. He does great things past finding out, Yes, wonders without number.

God’s actions, wonders and even His infinite perfections are beyond our comprehension. We can attribute infinitude to every aspect of God’s nature, character and being. His knowledge and wisdom are infinite, without measure. His mighty power is without limits, boundless and almighty.

“The Lord is great and mighty in power and His understanding has no limit.”

Psalm 145:3 NKJV Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable.

What exactly does His infinity mean?

We may taste and see that the Lord is good, but not be able to exhaust His goodness.

John 1:16 NKJV And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

The NIV says: “From the fullness of His grace we have all received one blessing after another.”

Consider the fact that each of us have received a share of His grace, goodness, and spiritual blessings, but we have not in any way depleted His goodness. The extent of God’s grace is infinitely greater than all of our sin, (Romans 5:20-21). God’s mercy, lovingkindness, and grace endure forever and are infinite. When we say that God is infinite in relation to time and space, we mean that there is no place where God is absent in all of His perfections. None of His attributes are limited in any way, He is infinite.

God’s infinity in relation to space refers to His omnipresence and immensity.

The Almighty God is so vast that He is everywhere present and transcends all limitations. In the fullness of His being, God is indeed everywhere present at once. This is not just a statement of God’s omniscience (knowing all things at once). God is present in the sum total of His being at each and every point of space, yet, His being does not take up all of space or contain everything in space. The idea of space or even the universe is somewhat limiting, even though we have not explored or even know the ends of the universe. God is omnipresent or simultaneously present in all places in the totality of His being.

Consider this in relation to God’s immensity.

He is greater than all of His creation. Although God is omnipresent and immense, He may reveal Himself in any one place in space or time in such a way so that He may be known in some physical way. Yet, God is not obligated to do everything He possibly can do. He is only obligated to remain true to Himself.

God has revealed Himself in such a manner that He may be known.

Watch Him walk and talk with Adam and Eve in the garden. Listen to His speak to Noah and then Abraham and Sarah. Stand in His presence at the burning bush and listen to His voice tell Moses how to deliver the Israelites from bondage. Behold the Lord our God at Sinai as the fire and glory of His presence shakes the mountain. This kind of thing happens throughout the Bible when God comes down in such a way that people may know Him. To indicate that we know about God’s love, light, and spirit, does not imply that we know all there is to know about His love, light, or spirit.

Four blind men walked up to an elephant. One grabbed his leg and said: “An elephant is like a tree.” The second one took hold of an ear and said: “An elephant is like a leaf on a tree.” The third grabbed its tail and said: “An elephant is like a rope.” The fourth put his hands on the elephant’s side and said: “The elephant is like a mountain.” Which one was correct? Each had a revelation of a part the elephant, but none knew the whole story.

There are many things we may know about God as He reveals Himself to us. His infinity ultimately brings us to the conclusion that God is beyond our full comprehension. Consider that God has shown you His grace, mercy and love in that He has saved you from your sins. We know by experience the depth of His grace, mercy and love, however we have by no means exhausted the depth of His grace, mercy and love. It is like diving into a river that expands past our boundaries of knowledge into infinity. We know and are moved by some of the depth of His power, overwhelming love, grace and mercy, but are not able to fully take in the vastness of His being.

Romans 11:33-34 NKJV Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?”

Romans 11:35-36 NKJV “Or who has first given to Him And it shall be repaid to him?” For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

Isaiah 55:8-9 NKJV “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 40:28 NKJV Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, The Creator of the ends of the earth, Neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

Ephesians 3:17-18 NKJV that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height—

Ephesians 3:19-20 NKJV to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,
